Pyramid of Masks

Part of the larger Kohunlich, the pyramid of masks is an early classic pyramid which has a central stairway lined with huge humanized stucco masks.


One of the oldest structures at Kohunlich, the pyramid was built in 500 A.D. Today the masks and some of the lower parts of the stairs are all that remain of the structure.

With just a few hotels in the neighborhood within the vicinity of this historical site, a small amount of tourist traffic might be predicted.


Located on the southwestern part of Quintana Roo, 24.5 miles northwest of Caledonia, Pyramid of Masks welcomes travelers lodging in this area of Mexico. Even if you aren't staying very close, you are free to drop by to enjoy a great time. If you're wondering, Chetumal is 32 and a half miles (52 and a half kilometers) to the east.

Reaching the Pyramid of Masks is an adventure all in itself. Luckily, there are traffic signs along the way to help you. The most direct way to reach the pyramid is to head West out of Chetumal on the Chetumal – Villahermosa Highway for just over 25 miles. Keep an eye out for signs pointing you to Kohunlich, because at around the 25 mile mark, a large green sign will point you left. Make that turn and follow it South for about six miles until it ends at the pyramid.
