Pyramid of Masks

Part of the larger Kohunlich, the pyramid of masks is an early classic pyramid which has a central stairway lined with huge humanized stucco masks.


One of the oldest structures at Kohunlich, the pyramid was built in 500 A.D. Today the masks and some of the lower parts of the stairs are all that remain of the structure.

Quintana Roo is a good option for those wishing to visit Pyramid of Masks, since travelers to this part of Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean will be pleased to have easy site access throughout their trip. With only a small number of accommodations in the community surrounding Pyramid of Masks, only a little tourist traffic can be predicted.


Located in Quintana Roo, 24.5 miles northwest of Caledonia, Pyramid of Masks invites local residents and visitors who are rooming in this part of Mexico. But even if you aren't staying in this location, you should consider stopping by to check out the sights. In case you're wondering, Chetumal is 32 and a half miles (52 and a half kilometers) to the east.

Reaching the Pyramid of Masks is an adventure all in itself. Luckily, there are traffic signs along the way to help you. The most direct way to reach the pyramid is to head West out of Chetumal on the Chetumal – Villahermosa Highway for just over 25 miles. Keep an eye out for signs pointing you to Kohunlich, because at around the 25 mile mark, a large green sign will point you left. Make that turn and follow it South for about six miles until it ends at the pyramid.
