Most seasoned tourists would agree that those visiting the Yucatan do not need to take taxis, but they are certainly great to have on hand. When you're staying in major tourist areas, you can walk from place to place; if you're planning to visit a lot of attractions, you'll want to rent a car or go as part of a tour; and buses here are known for their great service. But, what about those in between times when you're just too tired to walk, or you want a private ride and haven't rented a car? Thankfully, taxis are easy to find and readily available throughout much of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Maps

Depending on where you travel in Yucatan, you may find the streets filled with taxis, or extremely hard to come by. In most of the most popular resort areas, you can actually get by without hailing a cab because you can walk everywhere, but it is nice to have them around when you have been shopping or simply don't want to walk. People often find this to be the norm in Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, and Izamal. In places like Cancun, Merida, Chetumal, and Campeche, you'll find you're able to walk to most places if you stay in the downtown area, but taxis will be necessary for attractions that are outside of this area. Some places, such as Xcalak and Xpu Ha do not have a huge number of taxis on the streets, and will require you often to place a call and have a taxi meet you at a specified location when you need a ride.

For the most part you'll find taxis, which are white hatchbacks with colored stripes down the side, near beaches, restaurants, resorts, and shopping centers. Listed below are many of the most popular taxi companies in the region, so you'll know who to call whenever you can't seem to find one on the street.

The following chart indicates how to reach local taxi companies.

A good tip to keep in mind is to write down your desired destination on a piece of paper. Most drivers speak Spanish, and if you do not you may have trouble expressing where you want to go. Being able to hand the name to them for them to read will cut down on any confusion.

Rates, Fares, and Fees

Once upon a time, you would have to haggle with a taxi driver in the Yucatan in order to get a good price. Recently, taxi unions have taken over the pricing of taxi rides and made rates a permanent fixture. Now, there are no meters in the cars, and negotiation is not necessary at all. You'll be able to find lists of rates at the front desks of most hotels, plus drivers will always have them on hand. Even so, make sure to ask your driver for the price of your ride to be sure you are both on the same page.

Many drivers also make great tour guides. If you're interested in your own private tour of the area, you may be able to hire your driver for about 250 pesos, or $23(USD) an hour. Ask your driver or call a local taxi company for details.
